A story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end… but not necessarily in that order.
You’ve always wanted to tell a story but doesn’t know where to start. In your heart and mind, there is an interesting message you want to tell the world. But you fear people might think it’s wrong or no one can relate to it. Or it will be nothing compared to what others have done.
So, how do you get it out there? Where do you begin?
START FROM THE START AND FROM THE END
As you do in everything that you do in life, you start by making a decision that you do want to tell a story and up to where I want this to lead me.
Do you want to tell a message but doesn’t have a storyline yet in mind? Do you want to write a story? Do you want to write and capture it in images? Do you want to film an existing story? Do you want to tell the story through colors and lighting?
It takes a village to tell a story. A team of creative people coming together to create a 1-minute or 2-hour film. While you may have heard of award-winning films directed by a famous director – this director did not do it alone, he or she worked with a pool of visual storytelling geniuses – writers, cinematographers, producers, actors, etc.
Telling a story doesn’t mean you have to be a writer or director. Everything in the creative team, from the production assistant to the director should know how to tell a story, what the story is all about and how they want this story to transform the world.
At this point, you’ve somehow made a decision where or what you want to be. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be the final one.
Let’s start from the beginning.
Like how you start any chore, you start by getting your tools, knowing your tools and planning how to use these tools. Again, don’t worry, there are no hard rules on what these things should be. Find and gather anything that interests you about storytelling – watch old films, play with an amateur camera you borrowed or bought, or attend a free film seminar.
Each storyteller has its own unique path. We get inspiration from others but ultimately we create our own. Start by knowing what you want and where you want to be and begin making that first step.
